Italy Urges ECOWAS To Extend Ultimatum Issued To Niger Military Junta
The Italian government has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to extend the deadline issued to coup plotters in Niger Republic for the reinstatement of the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, on Monday said the only way to handle the Niger Republic issue is for the West African States to be diplomatic.
As reported by Reuters, Tajani told La Stampa newspaper: “The only way is the diplomatic one. I hope that the ultimatum of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which expired last night at midnight, will be extended today.”
SaharaReporters had on Sunday reported that there was anxiety in Northern Nigeria as the one-week ultimatum given to the Niger military junta by the ECOWAS led by President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria expired on Sunday.
Supporters of the coup in Niger reportedly converged at Naimey, Niger capital on Sunday. However, ECOWAS has not announced exactly when it will execute its proposed military action in the country.
