The APDA governorship candidate in 2019 Rivers State governorship election, Pastor Warigbani Ezekiel has alleged that the reason for governor Wike’s request to borrow 18bn. from Access bank, is to prosecute Edo State Governorship election scheduled for next month ,september, 2020.
In a press release made available to newsmen on Tuesday, 11th August, 2020, pastor warigbani stated that” there is the threat to frozen the Edo State government accounts, having blocked the ESHA account.”
.The Rivers State House of Assembly had on Monday approved Governor Nyesom Wike’s N18bn loan request meant for developmental projects in the state.
The approval was granted after the Speaker of the house, Ikunyi Ibani, read the governor’s request during plenary.
Wike, in the letter, said the loan would be serviced through internally generated revenue and would be fully repaid before the end of his tenure.
The governor said the loan would be used to accelerate development in the state, including the construction of the proposed fourth flyover at GRA junction in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the dualisation of the mummy-B Road to Stadium Road and the payment of ancillary facilities.
The press statement reads thus:
”Having carefully studied the recent happenings in the financial transactions and the overbearing levels of borrowing funds by the Rivers State government, we wish to make the following statements”.
”Rivers State is not Port Harcourt State, rather, it’s a State that needs expansion and evenly distribution of infrastructures.”
”Therefore, the 18 billion naira that had been approved by the Rivers State House of Assembly which Governor Wike claimed will be used to build flyover and the adjoining roads to it, is a confirmation that the governor is one-sided in his ideology. It’s an affirmation that he is interested in developing Port Harcourt and Apara kingdom only in 8years.”
”There are other parts of this State that are inaccessible.
I can give you few examples: if you drive towards the boundary between Rivers and Abia States, branching to the left (before the bridge) is a major road that passes through Umuebulu Community to Igboetche and links Rivers State with Imo State. That road measures about 15 kilometers. As I speak to you, all those Communities cannot be accessed by vehicles. The people there are neglected by this government.”
”What about Trans-Kalabari high way, the Ogoni/Andoni Unity Road which serves as a major conduit pipe and death trap have been abandoned, the road linking Ban-Ogoi in Tai LGA from Afam in Oyigbo LGA is abandoned, I can go on and on to show you that the governor has misplaced priorities.”
”Recall that Governor Wike just received N78.9B from the Federal government, which he is yet to account for.”
”Let me tell you that available information reveals that Governor Wike is too desperate to prosecute Edo State Governorship election, therefore, he decided to borrow the N18B, following the threat ro frozen the Edo State government accounts, having blocked the ESHA account”.
”To this effect, I make bold to challenge Governor Wike to make public/ or account for the N78.9B so collected. As it is evident that as at today access to rural communities in the state are in shambles, schools and rural health centres are in bad shape, pensioners are suffering, the youths are unemployed, etc. Nothing to show for the amounts so collected.”
”Sincerely, Wike is fooling the people of Rivers State.”
”We call on well meaning Rivers people to prevail on Nyesom Wike and stop him from using Rivers money to Prosecute Edo state election. Moreover, the State’s Internally Generated Revenue he claimed to be used to service the loan is bound to dwindle due to the Pandemic……”
”We call on all civil rights groups, the EFCC and the ICPC to promptly protest and investigate the Rivers government financial standing as Rivers debt profile is rocking hundreds of Billions of naira.”
