The Commissioner for water Resources and Rural Development, Dr. Tamunosisi Gogo Jaja, onTuesday,on a radio programe, Hard Facts, on 92.3 Nig. Info FM, admits the government’s failure in its responsibility of providing portable water for Rivers people.
Reacting to a question from Dayo, (OAP), on whether the government has absolved its self from the responsibility of providing water for the people, thereby expecting each household to provide water for theirselves, Dr. Tamunosisi claimed that the government is working so hard in that regards but failed to give insight to the efforts and when the water will start flowing.
The Commissioner had earlier announced the compulsory registration of all boreholes , both private and commercial in the state. According to him, the exercise is for effective water sources management and controlling the quality of water consumed by Rivers people.
Dr. Tamunosisi seem to have forgotten that the administration under which he is serving as a commissioner, has a blue print on water provision for Rivers people and his responsibility is to assist the governor in achieving that.
In 2010, the UNITED NATION General Assembly exlicitly recognized the Human Right to water and sanitation. Every one has the Right to sufficient, continuous, safe, acceptable, physically and affordable water for personal and domesticuse.
The UN noted that contaminated water and poor sanitation are linked to transmission of diseases such as Cholera, Diarrhoea, Dysentery, Hepatitis A, Typhod and Polio.
In view of these, the executive governor, H E. Nyesom Wike, in his blue print development plan for Rivers State, stated as follows:
‘’The NEW vision seeks to ensure regular access to portable water for all residents in Rivers State. For this purpose, our government will address the issue of water security and ensure that public water flows to provide homes and public places. To this end,our government will resuscitate and rehabilitate all existing and abandoned water station, reservours and distribution networks in the State, develop new water projects and treatment plants to service Portharcourt, Obio/Akpor and other urban Areas…. And strengthen the Water Management Board’’
Five years into the Governer Wike’s administration,no part of Rivers State is enjoying regular access to portable water as contained in the Rivers State NEW Vision.
That residents of Rivers State has been, and still provides water for their households, is a testimony of the government’s failure in its responsibility. If Dr. Tamunosisi is really concern about the quality of water consumed by Rivers people, he should, using his Ministry, provide the suitable and high quality water he thinks, suits Rivers people.
The day Rivers State government begings to provide portable water to its citizens, the sale and purchase of the contaminated water will cease.
